What is this?
The good, the bad and the silly of Deep Learning: Titanic survival predictions, Parisian street art classifier, chat bot that only speaks in platitudes. An occasional segway to Steinbeck's post-rodeo hangover 💫.
Who writes this?
Hello, I'm Przemek!
I live in Paris 🇫🇷, where my favorite pastime is riding a city bike at night and reflecting on the amusing paradoxes of life. I like hiking (still thawing after Denali), movies (Paris is the best city in the world to enjoy cinema) and writing things down to organize my thoughts.
Some of my current and previous projects:
I co-created Hash Code and scaled it from 200 participants to 100k+, the biggest team programming competition in the world. (story, goodbye note)
I work as an Engineering Manager at Google. Currently working on Fuchsia. Before that I was working on Chrome. I don’t write about work here. All the opinions and doubt presented are mine :).
Before Google I led the Image Analysis team at Adaptive Vision and wrote a book on Image Analysis Techniques for Industrial Vision (that was just before neural networks came around and replaced all these techniques)
What’s the difference between this newsletter and the pnote.eu website?
In addition to this newsletter, I also have a traditional blog website. Why have both? They serve different purposes:
the newsletter (this is where you are!) is for weekly notes, which are short, to the point and sometimes a bit personal. This format allows me to write often, test-drive different topics and reliably reach people interested in getting updates. The Substack platform handles the email delivery and hosts the post archive.
the website at pnote.eu is for less ephemeral and more technical writing. I develop the website myself, so I have control over presentation (ie. can spend unbounded number of hours tweaking the site design 🙃). The website doesn’t have a way to subscribe to updates, but I often link to new website articles in the newsletter!
